The Browning School is a K-12 boys school located on East 62nd Street (Lower and Middle Schools) and East 64th Street (Upper School) in midtown Manhattan, New York. Founded by scholar and teacher John A. Browning, The Browning School has been a leader in fostering the intellectual and personal growth of boys and young men since 1888. POSITION DESCRIPTION
Browning is searching for a full-time Lower School Math Specialist (leave replacement) for the beginning of the 2026-2027 academic year. The position will begin on or around August 27, 2026 and is expected to conclude on December 18, 2026. The expected salary for this position is $37,500 - $46,000. A bachelor’s degree or considerable experience in the role is required. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.
Key Responsibilities
The Lower School Math Specialist supports the teaching and learning of mathematics in Grades K-5 classrooms at Browning. The math specialist is responsible for building strong relationships with students and teachers in order to deliver the content and curriculum of the Browning math program. Successful Browning teachers believe in and desire the growth of all their students and have a passion for the art, craft, and science of pedagogy. Ultimately, teachers are responsible for the most important work of our School -- knowing our boys and teaching them well. Among other things, the Lower School Math Specialist is responsible for:
- Providing regular and on-going instruction and support in mathematics to boys in Grades K-5 through targeted push-in and/or pull-out learning support for both intervention and enrichment purposes
- Organizing benchmark math assessments in coordination with homeroom teachers
- Tracking student math progress through goal-setting and data collection
- Assisting with organizing and leading the implementation of MAP testing in Grades 3-5
- Leading weekly enrichment math teams in Grades 3-5
- Collaborating with the Lower School Student Support Team and homeroom teachers to integrate math goals into classroom activities
- Communicating with families about student needs, goals, and progress in math
- Coordinating with outside providers working with students on math and learning goals
- Creating strong relationships with students built on Browning’s core values of honesty, dignity, curiosity, and purpose
- Collaborating as a professional, collegial, and inspirational member of the faculty
- Participating in professional development to grow the self, department, and school
- Heartily contributing to the school community

A successful Lower School Math Specialist will possess most or all of the following:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in elementary education or a related field
- Deep understanding of curriculum teaching pedagogy in math
- Knowledge and appreciation of working with boys (preferred)
- Strong classroom management skills in creating a warm and productive learning environment for all students
- Understanding and appreciation of teaching students from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to proactively collaborate with students, faculty, and parents
- Refined writing and organizational skills
- Familiarity with Math in Focus, Singapore math, MAP testing, and/or other math intervention methods is highly preferred.
