The Browning School is a K-12 boys school located on East 62nd Street (Lower and Middle Schools) and East 64th Street (Upper School) in midtown Manhattan, New York. Founded by scholar and teacher John A. Browning, The Browning School has been a leader in fostering the intellectual and personal growth of boys and young men since 1888. Serving roughly 470 students in kindergarten through grade 12, Browning strives to combine the best of a traditional prep school environment and curriculum with imaginative teaching and a strong value system – all in a single-sex setting.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Browning is searching for a full-time Lower School Science and Computer Science & Engineering Teacher for the 2026-2027 academic year. The position will begin on or around August 27, 2026. The expected annual salary range for this position is $75,000-115,000, commensurate with experience. A bachelor’s degree or considerable experience in the role is required. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Lower School teachers are responsible for building strong relationships with students and delivering the content and curriculum of the Browning program. Successful teachers believe in and desire the growth of all their students and have a passion for their subject matter and for the art, craft, and science of pedagogy. Ultimately, teachers are responsible for the most important work of our School -- knowing our boys and teaching them well. Among other things, a Lower School Science Teacher is tasked with: 

 

Among other things, this role is tasked with:

  1. Teaching weekly and/or twice weekly science classes to students in several of the Lower School grades, which may include classes in kindergarten through grade 5
  2. Teaching weekly computer science & engineering (CSE) classes to students in Grades 2 & 3
  3. Developing and implementing an enthusiastic and welcoming learning space and curriculum that celebrates learning, cultivates a love and appreciation for science and CSE, incorporates opportunities for experimentation and exploration, and empowers boys to find and follow scientific interests and passions
  4. Using Browning’s Target-Focused Teaching and studentship methods to ensure student growth and alignment 
  5. Using and applying Next Generation Science Standards to inform grade level curriculum and lesson planning. 
  6. Maintaining lab space and inventory to ensure all safety regulations are followed across all science classroom spaces
  7. Collaborating with fellow department members and department chairs for curricular cohesion and spiralled alignment, in both Science and CSE. 
  8. Creating strong relationships with students built on Browning’s core values of honesty, dignity, curiosity, and purpose
  9. Collaborating as a professional, collegial, and inspirational member of the Lower School faculty. 
  10. Participating in professional development to grow the self, department, and school
  11. Communicating with families about curricular and student matters
  12. Performing non-classroom duties as needed such as early arrival, bus dismissal, lunch duty, and/or recess supervision
  13. Heartily contributing to the school community

A successful Lower School Science and Computer Science & Engineering Teacher will be a dynamic and team-oriented educator who will join a highly collaborative Lower School faculty and K-12 science and CSE departments. The ideal candidate will have a background in and passion for elementary science and CSE, as well as experience with the Next Generation Science Standards for curriculum alignment. Teaching experience with Lower School aged students is highly preferred, and a degree in education or science education is also preferred. This position includes the responsibility of helping to  maintain the laboratory space and materials. Browning’s science curriculum emphasizes a solid foundational experience intertwined with individual exploration and experimentation. The Lower School science and CSE programs are designed to be hands-on and engaging experiences for students.
