The Browning School is a K-12 boys school located on East 62nd Street (Lower and Middle Schools) and East 64th Street (Upper School) in midtown Manhattan, New York. Founded by scholar and teacher John A. Browning, The Browning School has been a leader in fostering the intellectual and personal growth of boys and young men since 1888. Serving roughly 470 students in kindergarten through grade 12, Browning strives to combine the best of a traditional prep school environment and curriculum with imaginative teaching and a strong value system – all in a single-sex setting.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Browning is searching for a full-time Lower School Spanish Teacher for the 2026-2027 academic year. This position may potentially include a K-8 World Language Department Chairship. The position will begin on or around August 27, 2026. The expected annual salary range for this position is $75,000-115,000, commensurate with experience. An additional stipend is added for department chairship. A bachelor’s degree or considerable experience in the role is required. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.


Key Responsibilities

 

The Lower School Spanish Teacher is responsible for implementing our Spanish language program by cultivating a love of language and beginning Spanish proficiency in our boys. This role primarily entails teaching classes in our Lower School from Grades K-5, as well as teaching one section of Spanish in our Middle School. A successful Lower School Spanish Teacher will bring expertise and passion in the field of language development, experience in providing language instruction to young learners, and a belief in and desire for growth of all their students. Additionally, the Lower School Spanish Teacher will be considered for the role of K-8 World Language Department Chair. 

 

Among other things, the Lower School Spanish Teacher is tasked with:

  1. Planning and delivering Spanish instruction to Lower School boys in Grades K-5 as well as one section of Middle School Spanish
  2. Developing and implementing an inspiring curriculum in conjunction using Browning’s Target-Focused Teaching and studentship methods to ensure student growth and alignment 
  3. Shepherding both the social-emotional and academic growth of the boys in their care
  4. Cultivating a classroom environment that is warm and welcoming, while holding students to high expectations for excellence
  5. Creating strong relationships with students built on Browning’s core values of honesty, dignity, curiosity, and purpose
  6. Monitoring student progress through goal-setting, assessment, and data collection
  7. Collaborating as a professional, collegial, and inspirational member of the faculty and the World Languages Department
  8. Communicating with families about curricular and student matters, including in written reports 
  9. Participating in professional development to grow the self, department, and school
  10. Performing non-classroom duties such as dismissal and lunch duty
  11. Heartily contributing to the school community

Additionally, the K-8 World Language Department Chair is tasked with:

  1. Support the development and implementation of an inspiring curriculum in conjunction with the division heads and other academic leaders
  2. Oversee the budgeting for the department
  3. Communicate with parents about the vision of the department and be the first point of contact for concerns
  4. Oversee the alignment and documentation of learning targets for the department, which includes an annual review
  5. Explore interdisciplinary opportunities with other departments and homeroom teachers
  6. Lead the hiring process for teachers within the department and mentor new and returning teachers alike
  7. Oversee the professional growth process for department members
  8. Arrange coverage for department members as needed
  9. Set a professional, collegial, and inspirational tone in the department
  10. Participate in Department Chair meetings

A dynamic and passionate teacher is sought to introduce Browning boys to the Spanish language, instilling a passion for both language and culture in our students. Browning’s language curriculum in the Lower School emphasizes conversational skills, auditory comprehension, vocabulary building, and cultural awareness and appreciation. The ideal candidate will have excellent fluency in Spanish, as well as experience working with children and strong relational and management practices in the classroom. An affinity for working with boys at different developmental stages is required. Teaching experience and a degree in an educational or linguistic field are preferred. Candidates who are interested in the World Language Department Chairship must also demonstrate strong leadership skills and demonstrated expertise in teaching.
